Fresh Indigo: Natural Dye Workshop August 20th 12-3 PM
Join fiber artesian Sarah Gotowka from Luna Fiber to learn how to extract pigment from locally grown Korean Indigo plants using an organic ice method. This will be demonstrated on protein fibers using a resist dye technique, loosely based on the Japanese shibori method, with fun tools like popsicle sticks. Sarah will deconstruct colonial narratives about indigo, including the fact that (surprise, surprise) Eliza Lucas Pinckney, revered by many for developing the indigo industry in the United States, did so by exploiting the knowledge and labor of enslaved people on her family's plantations. The goal of this Learn & Grow Session is to introduce participants to the art and science of natural dyeing, and to educate on the history of the indigo plant.
SOLD OUT ! Botanical Printing on the Farm September 17th 1-4 PM
We will begin the class with a short tour of our dye farm, and then harvest and pick flowers for our projects! We will then design and create our scarves. While they are “cooking,” we will have time to talk deeply about natural dye techniques, what sustainability can look like, and the complex histories of textiles.
This is the perfect class for anyone who wants to further their knowledge of plants, color and their relationship to fiber.
Refreshments and snacks provided.
